Roy was a leader as a student and athlete and continues to be a leader in the business world. He was considered one of the fastest men ever to play football for Northland. He earned a starting berth at right half on Northland's undefeated, unscored upon 1931 team that won the state college championship. Because of his speed he was called, "The Galloping Ghost from Edgerton." He also was a fine blocker and a rugged defender.

Hopkins captained the 1933 team as a junior. He played basketball for one season. He was a member of the choir for four years and the male quartette for three. He was in the student senate for three years, serving as president as a senior. He was president of the sophomore, junior and senior classes. He was on the athletic board for three years and president as a junior.

Hopkins now is manager for the Lake Superior District Power Company at Ironwood, Michigan.
