Hall of Fame
Michaele Michaels Weakland joins Northland College's Athletic Hall of Fame for exceptional contributions to the women's volleyball team 1986-1990. Michaele's outstanding Northland College volleyball career was off and running upon her arrival in 1986. As a freshman, she played the position of starting setter and was named All American by the National Small College Athletic Association (NSCAA). She went on to topple Northland records and smash conference accolades. Michaels's four-year volleyball career can best be described as shattering Northland College records. She blew away a total of eight marks during her four-year career, including most games played, career (418); most assists, career (3,174); most assists, single season (3,006); kill percentage, single season (276); most service assists, career (149); most assists and attempts in a single match. She was the seventh ranked setter nationally in the NAIA, not to mention becoming the first player in the National Small College Athletic Association's history to be named All American four times.
Michaele's dedication, drive and commitment to volleyball were well recognized by her team players and competitors. She was known for her ability to pull out all stops during games, as well as pushing herself to the limit. During her last season, she put out Wayne Gretzky like numbers for the second consecutive year when she surpassed the 1,000-assist mark in leading Northland to their fifth NSCAA national championship appearance in nine years. It also marked the fourth year that she was named to the NSCAA's national ranking of setters.
Today Michaele resides in Henderson, Nevada, with her husband and two stepsons. She is a first grade teacher at C.T. Sewell Elementary School in Henderson.
Michaele is a 1991 Northland College graduate with a degree in elementary education.
