McGroarty was one of the finest athletes to ever come to Northland. "Mac"came from Milwaukee after his freshman year at Marquette University. During his years at Northland College he excelled in both football and basketball. In football he was called the "sparkplug and as in the hole, always in the thick of the battle." McGroarty served as captain of the football team during the 1938-39 season and was captain of the basketball team for three years. At Northland "Mac" was a member of the Philathean Fraternity and the Athletic Board on which he served as president for two years. He was also the Wedge business manager and a house proctor. After graduation, McGroarty signed with the Green Bay Packers and also played with Cincinnati. A knee injury forced him to retire. For over 30 years, McGroarty has been in business with Wegner Door Service in Milwaukee. For many years he has coached a girls baseball team and coached football at St. Mathias Church. He has been involved in many other church activities and has been an avid bowler. Golf is presently his greatest love. The Wedge states: "Mac" will never be forgotten in Northland's football annals." This award is that testimonial to Ed McGroarty.
