Duane Borst came to Northland College from Ashland High School. He played basketball and was described as "a fine forward who teamed up well with (Red) Marx." He attended Northland for two years and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in accounting. He served as a First Lieutenant with the Ninth Air force B-26 Marauder Group in France, and he flew forty-three missions over Germany. He began his professional career with the Ernst & Ernst Accounting Firm in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1952, he began working at the Ryerson Company branch Inland Steel, later the Inland Steel-Ryerson, Co. He has since held many important positions there, the most recent being Corporate Comptroller. A Hall of Fame nominating committee member offered the following tribute to Duane Borst: "I have always regarded Duane Borst as a sincere, hard-working person whose ideals are exemplary. From reports I have heard, as he pursued his career, he implemented his ideals in influencing and guiding those who came up the ladder the behind him. He has maintained his modesty, good humor, and genuine friendliness, always cognoscente and

proud of his "roots."
