Hicks was an outstanding, all-purpose back at Northland College from 1961 to 1965. Although he wasn't a big man, his presence on the field was always evident and earned him four letters. At various times in his career, he was a running back, kick-off return and punt return specialist and defensive halfback. Hicks also played baseball at N.C. His being named team captain, most valuable player and NAIA Little All-American culminated his football career. An honor student, he was named to Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities and was an officer of his class.

Hicks returned to teach at Northland for two years and then went on to earn his Doctorate in Counseling from the University of Wisconsin- Madison. He has devoted his life to education and is currently Director of Planning, Evaluation and Data Processing at Cooperative Service Agency VI in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.
