Ray graduated in the Class of 1961 with a major in Biology and minors in Geography, Geology, and Physical Education. While at Northland, Ray was a four-year letterman in both track and football. He was named as an "All Conference Guard" for 3 years. He was captain of the football team both his junior and senior years. He was named a Norlite Athlete of the Week, listed as the "Outstanding Conference Player of the Week" five times, and was selected by state coaches to be a member of the All State Football Team Selection Committee. He was a member of the Phi Sig Fraternity.

He has been head high school football coach for 33 years and served as an athletic director for 25 years, currently at Boscobel High School. His overall record is 166 wins and 99 loses (67% winning percentage); he has won 14 Conference Championships in Wisconsin and finished second 13 other seasons; he has never had a losing season.
