Ron came to Northland with the intention to continue his participation in baseball and wrestling, but was encouraged to go back to playing football. In 1970 he led the NAIA in punt returns. He returned 10 punts for 288 yards. He was also named to the first team to the Gateway Conference team and 2nd team District 14 NAIA team. He was selected co-captain and was chosen by his teammates as the Most Valuable Player. Schutte was also captain of the wrestling team during his Junior and Senior years, led the team in victories in 68-69 with 15 and batted .307 during his baseball tenure.

Ron continues to be involved in athletics with his four children. He is a Manager for 3M and lives in St. Paul, Minnesota.
