Jerry M. Sullivan, Ashland Native and graduate of DePadua High School, was inducted into the Northland College Athletic Hall of Fame at the alumni banquet held on Saturday, July 17th at Northland College. Sullivan was an outstanding athlete at Northland College from 1953-1957. He excelled in
basketball, football, and track. Sullivan has 20 years of coaching experience in the areas of basketball, football, baseball, golf, and track. He is the former head basketball coach at South Milwaukee High School, where he became coach in 1963. He has taught social sciences in Wisconsin high schools for 25 years.
Sullivan's 1969, '74, '75, and '76 teams won conference championships. The 1975 and '76 teams set a conference record of 36 straight conference victories. The 1976 team had a perfect 25-0 record and won the Wisconsin Class A Basketball Championship. The United Press International named Sullivan Coach of the Year in 1976.
He has also served his community as President of the South Milwaukee Lions Club, and as a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church School Board. The community of South Milwaukee honored him for his contributions to the city in 1977.
During the summers, Sullivan has been involved in the medallist Milwaukee Bucks basketball camp program for many years. He was named assistant director in 1981 and is in charge of staffing 13 campsites through the mid-west. The Milwaukee Bucks program carries out 32 one-week sessions in 5 states. The Milwaukee Bucks basketball camp program has been cited as one of the finest summer basketball camp programs in the United States.
Sullivan was instrumental in the organization of the first Wisconsin
basketball camp program in 1965. Recently he has also served as sports color commentator on Milwaukee Educational Television and has been doing sports broadcasts in the Milwaukee area.
Sullivan is married to the former Sandra Oelke, Northland College Class of 1959.
