Orrin "Red" Marx graduated from Northland College in 1948. He participated in football for 3 years and basketball for 4 years, serving as football captain one year and basketball captain for two years. He was a member of the 1948 basketball team, which is one of the finest teams in the college's history, finishing 14-5. "Red" Marx was active in the college student government, athletic board, and Veteran's Club in which he served as vice-commander. He interrupted his education to serve in the United States Air Force from 1943 to 1946 during World War II.

He has devoted his life to working with and developing physical education programs for severely handicapped and mentally retarded children and young adults, regarding these children as "his" children, and was cited as an "Outstanding Teacher in Exceptional Education." He has developed course material for teachers of the handicapped, published such articles and monographs as "Physical Ability Rating Scale," "Physical Activities for Handicapped at Home," and he has been a member of the Optimist Club of Iowa City since 1956, being awarded a life membership as well as the Distinguished Member Award and is a past member of the Iowa City Recreation Commission providing service to his community.
