Pointers compete sweep over LumberJacks

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Northland College Men's Hockey team was defeated 5-0 by the No. 10 University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday night in Stevens Point, Wis.
 
After a few shots by UWSP, Sammy Lamphear had the first shot for the Jacks early in the first period. Just over five minutes into the game, the Pointers took the lead. Two minutes later, they doubled their advantage. The LumberJacks had a few more chances on net but were turned away. Before the period ended, UW-Stevens Point added one more goal.
 
Northland committed five penalties for 10 minutes in the second period. The Pointers took advantage of the extra skater and scored two power-play goals. Late in the period, the Jacks were on the power play. Nik Johnson had a shot on goal, but after two periods, Northland still trailed.
 
In the final period, Dakota Meyer made nine saves to keep UWSP off the board. The Northland offense had its best period. Joe Weber had the first shot of the period for NC, with Zach Hutchinson and Mac Reed following up. The Jacks had a few more chances down the stretch but were held out of the net.
 
Northland totaled 15 shots on goal, with Reed, Ethan Rubin, Logan Gallagher, and Brock Hart leading the team with two each. Nolan Christy blocked a game-high four shots. In goal, Meyer made 37 saves.
 
The Jacks will enter their final series of the regular season next week when they travel to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for a 7 p.m. puck drop on Thursday.
