RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The Northland College Men's Hockey team fell 5-1 in its regular-season finale to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday night in River Falls, Wis.
Joe Weber had the opening shot of the game just 15 seconds in. It wasn't until the four-minute mark that the LumberJacks had their next shot, when
Ben Stewart got around the goaltender and slotted the puck home. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Falcons tied things up just 40 seconds later. The Jacks were on the power play late in the period, with less than eight minutes remaining. However, the Falcons stole a pass and scored short-handed to take the lead.
The second period was fairly even, with UW-River Falls slightly edging Northland 13-8 in shots. With less than two minutes left, the Falcons netted their third goal of the game to take a 3-1 lead into the final period.
UW-River Falls was on the power play early in the third and took advantage, scoring their fourth goal. Less than 30 seconds later, the Falcons scored their final goal of the game. Northland had eight more shots in the final period but could not get past the goalie again.
Stewart scored his first goal of the season, with
Nolan Christy and
Evan Ilkos assisting him. Weber led the LumberJacks with five shots. Northland blocked 10 shots, with Stewart,
Ethan Rubin, and
Nick Bobroski each stopping a team-high two. In goal,
Andrew Yocum made 31 saves.
The Jacks will begin the WIAC Tournament on Friday with a two-game series.
