SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Northland College Women's Hockey team fell in its final game 9-0 against the University of Wisconsin-Superior in the First Round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in Superior, Wis.
The Yellowjackets started the game with heavy offensive pressure.
Kennedy Gruhlke had the opening shot of the game 18 seconds in. Goaltender
Maddy Bliss made 10 saves in the first five minutes. UW-Superior struck first netting the opening goal at 5:09. The only penalty in the first period came on Northland and the Yellowjackets took advantage scoring 23 seconds into the power play. Later in the period, UWS found Kailey Swerhun wide open on the back post and made it 3-0. In the dying seconds,
Tate Hutchinson was going coast-to-coast and was able to get a shot off in the final seconds but was turned away to end the first.
Less than two minutes in the LumberJills were back on the penalty kill. Northland held UWS off for a bit but the Yellowjackets netted their fourth. NC had its first power play of the game but was unable to land a shot on frame. A minute after having the extra skater the LumberJills were down to four on the ice. The Jills fought off the penalty with Bliss making five saves, but as soon as the power play was over UWS found the back of the net. Late in the period, Northland had another power play opportunity. Hutchinson was able to fire a shot toward the goaltender but it was stopped there. Gruhlke had the final shot of the period but the score remained 5-0.
Penalties continued to haunt the Jills into the third period. Northland played a man down for nine minutes. The Yellowjackets were able to take advantage and won the game 9-0.
Gruhlke led the attack with four shots on target, and
Rachel Fussy followed her with three. Defensively, Hutchinson,
Bre Rutz,
Nevaeh Trihey, and
Hannah Chady led the team with three shots blocked. In the net, Bliss made a season-high 75 saves.
