Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Jills fall in the penultimate game of the 2024-25 season

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Women's Hockey team lost 3-0 to the University of Wisconsin-Superior in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday night in Ashland, Wis.

After the game, Yvonne Durfee, Nevaeh Trihey, and Kyleigh Moffatt were all honored for senior night.

Senior Day

Trihey had the first shot of the game at the two-minute mark. After that, the LumberJills were unable to get another shot on target for the rest of the period. Goaltender Maddy Bliss did all she could in the opening period, making 22 saves to keep the score level after one.

The Yellowjackets maintained the pace with 10 shots, either blocked or saved, in the first four minutes. One minute later, UW-Superior broke the deadlock with their first goal. The LumberJills went on the power play soon after, and Kiera Fairnington recorded a shot on target. However, not long after, the game transitioned to four-on-four hockey. Once both penalties expired, the Yellowjackets struck again. Northland had another chance with the extra skater, but the score remained 2-0 at the end of the second period.

The LumberJills had their best offensive period to close out the game. Kennedy Gruhlke started the offense with the team's first shot. Northland then went on a 5-on-3 power play. The Jills showed good puck movement, with Trihey firing three shots on goal, but they were all turned away. In the final stretch, NC pulled the goalie for the extra skater, but UWS found the back of the net for a third time, securing the 3-0 victory.

Trihey, on Senior Night, led Northland with six shots on target. Rachel Fussy followed with three, and Fairnington rounded out the top three with two. Defensively, Durfee blocked six shots, and Gruhlke had three. In net, Bliss made 48 saves.

The LumberJills and Yellowjackets will finish the series tomorrow (Saturday) with a 2 p.m. puck drop.
