Two-goal third period lifts St. Scholastica over Northland

Bear scores his first collegiate goal

DULUTH, Minn. – The Northland College Men's Hockey team fell on the road 3-1 at the College of St. Scholastica Saturday night in Duluth, Minn., in non-conference action. Freshman Tristen Bear scored his first collegiate goal to start the game for the LumberJacks.
 
Off the opening faceoff, the Jacks had a quick shot from Luke VanBaalen. Shortly after Andrew Yocum was tested with two shots from CSS. Northland had its first powerplay three minutes in. Joe Weber and Brock Hart had shots for NC but at the end of the two minutes, we remained scoreless. Tristen Bear scored his first collegiate goal to give the Jacks the lead 13 minutes in. Yocum kept a clean sheet for the remained of the period after seeing 21 shots.
 
Northland was plagued with penalties in the second period. The Jacks had five two-minute penalties in the second frame. The Saints found the equalized on the first powerplay of the period, 40 seconds in. Yocum made 17 more saves to keep the game level. Northland had four shots in the second period coming from Nik Johnson, Ben Stewart, and Zach Hutchinson.
 
The Saints took the lead five minutes into the third period and 16 seconds later CSS doubled its advantage. The Jacks had a great opportunity near the end of the period after a five-minute major was called. The Jacks sent many shots toward the Saint's goaltender but couldn't find twine. In the final minutes, the Jacks opted for the extra skate but still were kept out and ended the game 3-1 in favor of St. Scholastica.
 
Yocum made 47 saves in the contest with Northland tallying 23 shots on target. Bear earned his first collegiate point with the goal. Trey Taylor and Evan Ilkos assisted on the goal earning a point in the game as well.
 
The Jacks start Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action next week when they travel to the University of Wisconsin-Stout for a 7 p.m., start on Friday
