Ashland, WI - The Northland College Lumberjacks earned their first WIAC win of the season in exciting fashion on Thursday evening, downing the UW-River Falls Falcons by a score of 2-1. With the win the Jacks are now 4-12-3 and 1-8-1 in the WIAC while the Falcons dropped to 10-9 and 6-4 in the WIAC.
The Jacks struck first in the opening period when
Connor Evans fired a shot from the blue line that
Cameron Coutre was able to redirect past the Falcons goaltender. Despite a physical first period that featured a total of 10 penalty minutes, neither team found the goal again and the Jacks were able to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
The Jacks were gifted a four minute power-play thanks to a Falcons penalty in the final seconds of the first period, and the Jacks wasted no time taking advantage in the second period. Evans picked up his second assist of the evening when he fed
Andrew Liwiski who hammered a one-time shot past the glove of the Falcons goaltender for the 2-0 lead. Only a minute later the Jacks nearly added to their lead when
Kenny Styles was denied by the crossbar. The Falcons cut into the lead with just under 14 minutes left in the period, courtesy of a goal from Caleb Anderson. Both teams had chances over the rest of the period but the Jacks'
Chris Curr and his counterpart for the Falcons, Dysen Skinner, kept the score at 2-1 going into the second intermission.
The third period was an exciting affair that wasn't short of scoring chances or penalties. Despite all the action, neither team as able to find the back of the net the Jacks were able to come away with the 2-1 win. Curr made several key saves in the dying minutes of the game to preserve the win. For the game, he recorded 27 saves in net.
The Jacks return to action on Saturday when they travel to River Falls for a 7:00 PM matchup.
