Menomonie, WI – The Northland College LumberJacks looked headed for overtime in Wednesdays WIAC contest with UW-Stout, but the Blue Devils were able to take advantage of a powerplay and find the back of the net with only 1:38 left in the game to earn the win.
The first period saw a defensive battle by both teams as they tried to get on the board first. With back and forth shots, both teams couldn't find the back of the net. With 2:54 remaining in the period, UW-Stout skated two players down as Northland College tried to take advantage. But the Blue Devils held on tight and killed both penalties off.
The score remained 0-0 going into the first intermission. The Lumberjacks out shot Stout in the first period 8-7.
The second period looked a lot like the first period as far as goals, but more offense was involved. The Blue Devils ended the period with 14 shots and the Lumberjacks ended with 9. Both teams went on power play chances, but did not score as the score remained 0-0.
With 8:29 left in the game, both teams took a penalty and the game saw four on four play. Each team had their chances to score, but no goals were recorded.
Another four on four was made with 3:05 left. But this time, Northland took a penalty during the four on four which gave the Blue Devils the advantage they needed to find the net late.
Blue Devil's Zach Cloutier ended with a shutout, a win, and recorded 23 saves. Northland's
Chris Curr ended the game with 39 saves.
Both teams meet again on Friday in Ashland, WI.
