Ashland, WI – The Northland College Lumberjacks celebrated Senior Night by taking on the number two team in the country in the University Wisconsin-Eau Clair Blugolds. The Jacks went toe to toe with the Bluegolds but ultimately lost 3-2.
The Bluegolds jumped out to a lead midway through the opening period courtesy of a goal from Jack Murphy.
Gennaro Anzevino turned away 18 shots throughout the opening frame to keep the Jacks within striking distance as the period ended with a 1-0 score line.
The Bluegolds struck again in the second period to go ahead 2-0. Only two minutes later the Jacks got back into the game by taking advantage of a power play. Senior
Kurt Sonne found the back of the net on a scramble right on top of the crease with just under five minutes to play in the second period.
Cole Woodliffe and senior Kalib Ford assisted on the play.
The Bluegolds added to their lead early in the third period to take a 3-1 lead. The Jacks struck back with 9:04 left to go in the game on a goal from Kalib Ford.
Ty Kraus intercepted a pass inside the blue line and quickly fed Ford who maneuvered around the goalie before sending a backhanded shot into the net.
The Jacks created several chances over the remainder of the period but the Blugolds were able to keep them out of the net and hang on for the 3-2 win.
Anzevino made 36 stops in net for the Jacks.
Graduating for the Jacks are seniors Kalib Ford,
Ty Kraus,
Kyle Pouncy,
Brandon Workun,
Jacob Jeske, and
Kurt Sonne.
The Jacks are in action next on Saturday when they have a rematch at home with the Blugolds. The game is set to start at 3:00pm.
