ASHLAND, Wis. - Northland College (2-14-2, 2-9 NCHA) took on the Marian (7-11-0, 3-8 NCHA) Sabres this Friday evening. This was a very aggressive game on both sides, but it was the Sabres who came out on top.
The LumberJacks came out slow in the first period allowing a Sabre goal within the first seven and a half minutes. They were able to pick up their momentum after this goal however. The Jacks went into the locker room down by one at the end of the first period. As the second period got underway Marian scored again taking a commanding lead. However,
Drake Hunter (assisted by
Ben Owen and
Chris Belhumeur) capitalized on a Northland powerplay chipping away at the deficit. Marian didn't wait long after Hunter's goal as they to back their two goal lead. Northland was down 3-1 as the second period came to a close.
It didn't feel like a lot was happening at the beginning of the third, but as we got deeper into the period intensity rose and soon there were a couple close call plays on both sides. A Marian shot came inches from the goal line and was stopped just short from being a goal. After this the Jacks got a surge of energy.
Karson Kuntz (assisted by
Colby Spoonemore) came up with shot bringing the game within one goal. In hopes of tying the game with a minute left our goalie was pulled. Marian however, was able to score with our empty net. This brought the game to 4-2 in favor of Marian and would be the final score.
Kuntz and Hunter share one goal each as Owen, Belhumeur, and Spoonemore had an assist.
Jesse DiLillo had 23 saves tonight. The LumberJacks are back in action tomorrow afternoon looking for a split with the Sabres.
