On May 4th, 2001 the Northland College softball team in just their third year of existence advanced to the first championship game of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) tournament. They played the #1 seed and host College of St. Scholastica on Kenwood Avenue Field. In one of the innings the LumberJills staged an incredible rally scoring ten runs after two were out, they held on and defeated the Saints for the first time in school history. Since then the LumberJills and Saints meeting in a UMAC championship has become a somewhat frequent event occuring six times in the thirteen years.
Thirteen years to the day since the Jills improbable two out rally, the Saints had one of their own in a UMAC championship game on Kenwood Avenue Field. After the Jills stranded two runners in the top of the first inning, St. Scholastica scored nine runs, all with two outs in the bottom of the frame. The Saints never looked back and cruised to a 16-1 win to claim the championship.
Kaitlyn Witthun (So., Cambria, Wis.) was a bright spot for the LumberJills going three for three.
"That first inning was difficult to bounce back from." said Head Coach
Steve Wammer, "I am proud of the way we continued to play the game hard until the final out. Although this game was disappointing the season wasn't. This team was picked in the pre-season to finish sixth and they finished fourth, then as a #4 seed they beat the #3 and #2 seed to make it to the championship game."
