LumberJills Display Power in UMAC Elimination Game

5/3/2014 2:55:00 PM

The Northland College softball team put on a power display in the first inning of the first elimination game of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) tournament.  The LumberJills scored six runs in the inning which featured three home runs.  Kaitlyn Witthun (So., Cambria, Wis.) drew a walk to start the game.  Jayna Loy (Sr., Ontario, Calif.) and Cassie Baumgarten (So., Becker, Minn.) followed with back to back home runs.  After Averi Kanyuh (Fr., Rapid River, Mich.) and Brigid Reina (Jr., Garden City, N.Y.) both singled, Carolyn Malecha (Jr., Belle Plaine, Minn.) blasted the Jills third home run of the inning.

Northland added one run in both the second and third innings to extend their lead to 8-0.  Northwestern got on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the third.  The Jills hung up another crooked number in the fifth when they scored three behind doubles from Loy and Kelsey Bodart (So., Oconto, Wis.).  Northwestern picked up one run in the bottom of the fifth after which the game was ended due to the eight run rule.

"We did a great job of coming out and hitting the ball really well." said Head Coach Steve Wammer, "Now we get to keep playing softball!"

The LumberJills will play the loser of the 2:00 p.m. game between St. Scholastica and UM-Morris
