The Northland College Softball team swept a doubleheader against North Central University in Minneapolis. Two freshmen hurlers threw one hitters for the LumberJills.
Crystal Diaz (Fr.,, Calif.) won a 7-0 decision in the first game, while
Callie Kopp (Fr., Schaumburg) posted a 10-0 win in the nightcap.
In the opener Diaz showed her dominance early when she set a school record for strikeouts in an inning with four (one batter reached when she struck out on a wild pitch). A soft single over the shortstops head to lead off the second would be the only hit the Rams would record. Diaz ended up with 9 strikeouts on the day. As dominant as Diaz was, the Jills bats were also hot. Northland pounded out 14 hits in the game.
Cassie Baumgarten (So., Becker, Minn.) led the way with three hits including two doubles.
Kaitlyn Witthun (So., Cambria, Wis.),
Kelsey Bodart (So., Oconto, Wis.),
Katie Groeschel (So., Green Bay, Wis.) and Diaz each had a pair of hits.
In the second game Kopp had North Central hitting weak ground balls for most of the run rule shortened five innings. The only hit she gave up also came in the second inning on a soft liner up the middle. Again Northland's bats were strong as the Jills pounded out 13 hits. Averi Kayuh (Fr., Rapid River, Mich.) had three hits, while
Brigid Reina (Jr., Garden City N.Y.) and Witthun both had a pair. Baumgarten drove a long home run over the right field fence.
"Today we really played well." said Head Coach
Steve Wammer, "All facets of the game came together, we had outstanding pitching, solid defense, and great hitting."
