Senior Day Features Extra Inning Win and Epic Comeback Falling Short

Senior Day for the Northland College softball team had two memorable games against Bethany Lutheran College.  In the first game the LumberJills topped the Vikings 5-4 in eight innings.  Bethany held on for a 16-13 win in the second as Northland stormed back from a thirteen run deficit.

In the opener Northland fell behind 4-0 when the Vikings struck for four runs in the top of the third.  Northland answered back in the bottom of the frame with three runs.  Faye Koosmann (So., Mellen, Wis.)  doubled home Jayna Loy (Sr., Ontario, Calif.) and Averi Kanyuh (Fr., Rapid River, Mich.) who had singled and walked.  Koosmann later scored on a sacrifice fly by Brigid Reina (Jr., Garden City, N.Y.).
The score stayed 4-3 until the bottom of the seventh.  Koosmann drew a walk to start the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice by Reina.  After Carolyn Malecha (Jr., Becker, Minn.) singled to put runners on the corners, Briana Tody (Fr., Ashland, Wis.) hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game.  Kaitlyn Witthun (So., Cambria, Wis.) led off the eighth inning with a double, after a Loy single, Cassie Baumgarten (So., Becker, Minn.) ripped a walk off single to give the Jills the victory.

The second game didn't start of well for the LumberJills as Bethany plated eleven runs in the first inning and added two in the third to lead 13-0.  Northland slowly worked their way back into the game scoring one in the third, three in the fourth, five in the fifth, and four in the sixth.  However the rally fell short as the Vikings held on for a 16-13 win.  Reina and Loy each had three hits for the LumberJills.

"These games showed what this team is made of." said Head Coach Steve Wammer, "We rallied to win in our last at bats in game one and didn't throw in the towel when facing a big deficit in the second game."
