The Northland College Softball team had a heartbreaking loss to the top team in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference today.  The undefeated College of St. Scholastica topped the LumberJills 11-9 in the first game of a doubleheader and then won 13-2 in the second.

In the first game Northland jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning highlighted by Crystal Diaz' (Fr., Burbank, Calif.) two out RBI single.  Northland extended the lead in the second when Cassie Baumgarten (So., Becker, Minn.) led off the inning with a triple and scored on Averi Kanyuh's (Fr., Rapid River, Minn.) single.  St. Scholastica got on the board with a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning; however the Jills answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame on a three run home run from Diaz.  In the fifth the Saints closed the gap to 8-4 as they scored three runs, but Northland once again extended the lead, this time on a solo home run by Jayna Loy (Sr., Ontario, Calif.).  The score remained 9-4 until the top of the seventh when St. Scholastica scored seven unearned runs, although the Jills threatened in the bottom of the inning the Saints held on for the win.

In the second game St. Scholastica struck early for three runs in the first.  Loy who was the starting pitcher was injured in the inning and the Jills were never able to make a run.  Baumgarten drove in the Jills only runs with a two run home run.

"The first game was a tough loss." said Head Coach Steve Wammer, "We played well, hit the ball well, but had a couple breaks go against us.  The good news is we know we can play with anyone in the conference, we will regroup and use that confidence to help us down the stretch in UMAC play."
