The Northland College Softball team has struggled at the plate during the first three days of their spring training trip in Fort Myers, Fla. The LumberJills have dropped their first six games.
On their opening day the Jills fell to Alverno College in their first game 8-0. The score was deceiving as Alverno clung to a 1-0 lead until the final frame when they scored seven runs.
Averi Kanyuh (Fr., Rapid River, Mich.) picked up her first collegiate hit in the game. Northland also dropped a 15-8 decision to Dominican on day one.
Crystal Diaz (Fr., Burbank, Calif.) and
Erin Gilligan (Fr., Oconto Falls, Wis.) recorded their first collegiate hits in the game.
"The Averno game was a great game with a misleading score." said Head Coach
Steve Wammer, "if we could have had a timely hit before the last inning things may have been different. In the Dominican game we had a couple of bad breaks, including a great throw that likely would have ended an inning that hit an umpire, extending the inning."
On Tuesday the Jills again dropped a pair of games falling to Kenyon College 6-0 and Clark University 8-0.
Faye Koosmann (So., Mellen, Wis.) and
Kaitlyn Witthun (So., Cambria, Wis.) each had a pair of hits for the Jills in the Kenyon game. Northland managed only three hits against Clark
Wednesday Northland fell to Wilmington University 8-0 despite being outhit only 7-4. Bluffton topped the team 6-2 in a game where the Jills outhit their opponent 10-6.
Callie Kopp (Fr., Schaumburg, Ill.) picked up her first collegiate hit in the game.
"We are a young team." Wammer commented, "if you just look at our record so far, you would say we are unsuccessful. However the purpose of our spring trip is to develop. We move a lot of players around, we have a lot of players without much experience, so although we want to win games of course our primary goal is getting better. The coaching staff is happy with the individual progress many of our players are making. We have struggled with results at the plate; however our process is improving."
"In the last game we outhit Bluffton, but had one bad inning." Wammer continued, "Our teams have always been a good hitting team and I am certain this will continue. We will enjoy our day off in Fort Myers where the temperature is in the 70's and then come back ready to play on Friday."
