Northland drops opening UMAC match to UW-Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis.– The Northland College Volleyball team fell in its opening Upper Midwest Athletic Conference match 3-0 (15-25, 14-25, 12-25) to the University of Wisconsin Superior Tuesday night in Superior, Wis.
 
In the opening set the teams traded points up to 11-11. Britta Josephson had the first kill of the match for Northland's second point of the set. Josephson and Kennedy Gruhlke both had service aces in the opening stretch. The Yellowjackets pulled away when they went on a 13-to-3 run to close out the set.
 
The Yellowjackets started on a 5-to-1 rally to take an early lead. Northland kept them close and closed the gap to 10-11 with three points in a row with Leah Allan scoring on two attacks. The Jills could not catch up as UWS went on another length run to go up five. UW-Superior continued to widen the lead and took set two 25-14.
 
The Yellowjackets started the third set fast taking a quick 11-to-4 lead leading to a Northland time out. Of the four Northland points, Josephson had two kills and Allan had one. The early lead proved to be too much to the LumberJills as they fell 25-12.
 
Josephson led Northland on the attack with 12 kills, her second match with double-digit kills and setting a new season-high. Allan finished behind her tallying five. Ellison DeZwarte and Gruhlke also recorded kills in the match. Kodie Rempp assisted on 16 points in the match and dug nine attacks. Allan led the defense with 12 digs.
 
Northland makes its home opener on Friday as it continues UMAC play as they host the University of Minnesota Morris at 7 p.m.
