Northland holds off Beloit to win first game of the season

BELOIT, Wis. – The Northland College Lacrosse team gets their first win of the season topping Beloit College 12-11 Tuesday night in Beloit, Wis.
 
The Buccaneers took an early 2-0 lead but goals from Matt Maudsley, Lagan Gallagher, and George Haigley gave the Jacks the lead after the first quarter.
 
Northland continued their run early into the second to expand their lead to 6-2. Beloit went on a run of its own leveling game before the half.
 
In this game of runs, Northland came out firing with Brodie Trollop scoring three in a row to retake the lead. Another goal from Maudsley put the score at 10-7 entering the final quarter.
 
In the first five minutes of the final quarter, both teams traded a goal. Then it was a quiet eight minutes before a high-scoring finale. Beloit cut the lead to one with just over two minutes remaining. In his first game back, Andrew Liwiski scored to give Northland a little more cushion entering the final stretch. The Buccaneers scored their fourth of the quarter but the Jacks held them off to win 12-11.
 
Trollop led the scoring for Northland with a season-high five goals. Gallagher, Maudsley, and Liwiski all found the back of the net twice and Haigley had the final goal. Senior Liwiski scored his first career game-winning goal in his first game of the season.
 
Rudy Ruegemer earned his first collegiate win making 10 saves in the contest. Max Shafer led on the defensive side of the ball with six caused turnovers and 11 groundballs.
 
The Jacks are on the road for their next game. They will play Clarke University at 4 p.m., on Thursday.
 
Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, WI. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 14 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, Midwest Lacrosse Conference, and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
