Northland College Men's Soccer played a non-conference match on the road Tuesday evening. The team traveled down to Watertown, Wisconsin for a matchup with Maranatha Baptist University. Coming in to tonight's game, the LumberJacks were riding a four match scoring drought. They broke out of the slump in a big way with four goals in the match, winning the game 4-2 in the process.

The LumberJacks broke into the scoring column in the 34th minute of the match. Izaak Clarke, who had the only other goal on the season, found the back of the net unassisted to give Northland the early advantage. Nearly eight minutes later, it was Clarke again putting a shot past the Sabercats Ian Balyo, increasing the lead to 2-0. Diego Castaneda picked up the assist on the second goal. Northland wasted no time adding another goal. Not even two minutes later, freshman Julian Swensen scored his first collegiate goal, assisted by Tjaden Whisenhunt. Whisenhunt, who was making his first collegiate start in goal, found Swensen on a long goal kick for the rare keeper assist. Northland would take the 3-0 lead into halftime.

The second half began with a quick goal from the Sabercats to help shrink the deficet. The game remained a back and forth battle for a majority of the second half, until the two teams traded goals late. Northland scored their fourth goal of the match in the 78th minute. Steven Melendez scored his first collegiate goal, with another freshman, Quinn Bieber, picking up his first career assist. The Sabercats scored the games final goal a minute later to round out the final 4-2 result. Whisenhunt made three saves enroute to his first win in net.

"It is nice to pickup the first win of the season," said head coach Greg Gilmore. "But I'm most pleased that we got to see some other players play extended minutes in a real game for the first time. We still have a few things to clean up, but I think this match will help us build more momentum heading into Martin Luther on Friday."

The LumberJacks (1-4-2, 0-0-1 UMAC) continue conference play this weekend with a two game roadtrip. They play Martin Luther College on Friday afternoon before heading to Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday.

Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, WI. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 14 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, Midwest Lacrosse Conference and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
