Jills Win Twice to Open Lawrence Tournament

LumberJills Volleyball opened the Lawrence Tournament in Appleton, Wisconsin on Friday with a pair of victories. Northland earned wins against Rockford University and Lawrence University, each by a 3-1 margin.

Northland College Women's Volleyball began play at the Lawrence Tournament in Appleton, Wisconsin hosted by Lawrence University on Friday afternoon with a match against Rockford University. Rockford jumped out to the early lead with a 25-21 first set win. The LumberJills rallied back in set two to even the match with a hard fought 26-24 win. A convincing 25-10 victory in set three put the Jills in front for good, as they went on to win set four 25-22. The match victory marked the first win of the new season for Northland. Elizabeth Montgomery led the Northland attack with 16 kills, while Larissa Fossum and Shelby Justman each added 11. Rachel Callow had a match high 35 set assists. Fossum and Annika Herlevi tied with 11 digs to lead the Jills.

The LumberJills weren't done with their fast start to the tournament. After waiting for several other matches to conclude they retook the court to take on the hosts in the final match of the day. Carrying momentum from their earlier victory the Jills wasted no time establishing the lead with another 25-10 set. The Vikings would respond with a second set victory, before Northland regained the upper hand in the third and sealed the win in the fourth. Fossum and Montgomery paced the Jills with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Callow added another 29 assists. Alexa Zadra led all players with 7 service aces.

"It was great to see us be successful as a team today," said head coach Chelsea Meierotto. "We started to display some rhythm and confidence on the court. The girls played hard and fought through some challenges. These early season tournaments are to prepare us for conference play. We have plenty to work on still and more games in the tournament tomorrow, but winning a couple today was important."

Northland (2-4, 0-0 UMAC) will play two more matches tomorrow to conclude the Lawrence Tournament. The LumberJIlls will take on Mount Mary at noon, before finishing with Maranatha Baptist at 4:00 PM.
