Mankato, MN – The Northland College Lumberjacks travel to Bethany Lutheran College this evening to take on the Vikings in a UMAC semifinal match.The Vikings finished the regular season at 13-6 and earned the leagues second seed while the Jacks finished 10-9-1 which was good for the third seed.The winner of today's match will take on the winner of the UW-Superior and Northwestern game in the leagues championship, scheduled for Saturday.
The Vikings took both regular season contests between the two teams with 1-0 score lines. In Ashland the Jacks battled for ninety minutes and just missed several scoring chances in the final minutes, while the Vikings took a double overtime contest in Mankato.
The Jacks are looking to extend a season that's already set several program benchmarks.This is the first time since they joined the NCAA in 2004 that they finished with a winning record, and the ten wins is also the most in the NCAA era. In addition, the Jacks enter tonight's contest with post season experience. After a fourteen year absence, this is the third straight UMAC playoff appearance for the Jacks and the highest position in the league to date."Obviously we're pleased with our position and happy to have a chance to extend our season," commented third year Head Coach
Greg Gilmore."I think short and long term we're capable of finishing higher, but right now, our season is still going while most programs in the country are already in the off season. Our guys have earned the right to keep playing, and we want to try to make the most of it."
