10 Man Jacks down Cougars

Ashland, WI – The Northland College Lumberjacks picked up a crucial UMAC victory on Friday evening over the University Minnesota Morris Cougars.  The Jacks are now 2-3 in UMAC play while the Cougars drop to 2-1-1.

After controlling the opening the opening thirty five minutes and not allowing a shot, the Jacks found themselves in difficult territory when they were reduced to 10 men.  The Jacks put in a resilient defensive effort and continued to stymie the Cougars attack for the rest of the half.  With only seconds remaining in the half, senior Brad Whiles launched a cross into the Cougars box which found junior Rodane Williams who buried the ball into the back of the net to give the Jacks a 1-0 lead.

Just over seven minutes into the second half Ainsworth Grant extended the Jacks lead with a rocket free kick from more than forty yards away.  Grants shot knuckled through the air and hammered off the far post before finding the net, giving the Jacks the extra cushion on the scoreboard.

The Cougars answered back in the 58th when Ben Heyel converted a penalty to make it 2-1.

The penalty kick turned out to be the first, and the only shot on frame the Jacks would allow on the entire afternoon, allowing them to take away the 2-1 win.

The Jacks are in action tomorrow when they take on the Crown College Storm at 2:00pm.
