9/7/2013 6:40:00 PM

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Northland College (0-8) travelled to Macalester University to play in a highly competitive five team tournament.

The first match of the tournament saw Northland take on the host Macalester. The Jills would get out to a slow start being defeated 25-10, and 25-9 in the first two sets, but would make the third set interesting. The set would start with the teams battling to a 9-9 tie when Northland would go on a five point run to take a 14-9 lead. Macalester would have an answer by going on a six point run to retake the lead at 15-14.

Northland would manage to retake the lead at 18-15, and extended it to 20-16. The Scots then found a way to break the Northland momentum and finish out the set on a 9-1 run, and earn the sweep with a 25-21 set win.

Tayler Viegut and Averi Kanyuh each had six kills over the match, while Alison Blackford had eight digs.

MACALESTER BOX

Finishing out the first day of the tournament, Northland was pitted against in-state rival UW-Superior. The Jills again started slowly falling in the first set 25-9, but bounced back quickly with a well played second set.

The set was characterized by back and forth play, where neither team was willing to budge. The biggest lead either team would be able to take was a two point advantage. Superior was able to take advantage of service and attacking errors to find a way to pull out a squeeker in the 25-23 second set. The LumberJills were unable to bounce back and fell in the final set by a final of 25-12.

Kelsey Bodart had 12 assists in the match as Cassie Baumgarten, Tayler Viegut, and Averi Kanyuh each had five kills.

UW-SUPERIOR BOX

Northland started out the second day against the Carleton Knights, and were able to get off to a good start. Carleton, however, found a couple of good streaks, and Northland wasn't able to get a side out. The Knights were able to sweep Northland in straight sets 25-16, 25-11, 25-11.

Kelsey Bodart had 16 assists in the match, and Alison Blackford had 11 digs.

CARLETON BOX

The final match for Northland was against the Blue Devils of UW-Stout. The Jills best set was the opening set, but
Northland got out to a slow start at the beginning of the set and it ended up being the difference. Stout jumped all over Northland and took a quick 10-3 lead. From there, though, Northland held their own, but weren't able to cut into the deficit, and ultimately fell 25-14. Stout took advantage of the quick start and swept Northland 25-9, and 25-6 in the following sets.

Cassie Baumgarten led the attack with five kills.

STOUT BOX

Coach Falkenhagen on the weekend tournament. ""I don't think we brought our best performance this weekend but the team did learn more about each other and I learned more about what weaknesses we need to really focus on in practice to improve upon. I do feel the outside hitters Averi Kanyuh and Cassie Baumgarten really improved their performance this weekend, and I know they are only going to keep getting better from here."

The Jills are next in action at Finlandia on Wednesday, September 11th at 7 pm (EST).
