ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – The Northland College Baseball team was bested in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader with Crown College 3-16 and 3-11 Saturday evening in St. Bonifacius, Minn.
Ridge Guyette started the game with a leadoff single. The Polars also had a leadoff hit in the first, a double, and then a home run, giving them the first lead.
The first three batters for Northland all reached base in the second, starting with
Nathan Davison getting hit by a pitch.
Tyler Murphy singled and
Grant Vessey doubled to drive in the Jacks' first run. With runners on second and third, Guyette hit a single up the middle to level the game at two.
Andrew Birko struck out the first two Polars' batters in the second, and
Jay Harris threw out a runner trying to steal second to get out of the inning.
The LumberJacks would take the lead in the fourth. Murphy would start the inning with a single and would get himself in scoring position after stealing second. An error by the center fielder saw Murphy make it home to put NC up 3-2. In the bottom of the inning, Crown had the bases loaded with two outs. An error scored two runs to have the Polars up by one after the fourth.
Crown put up big numbers in the fifth and sixth to take game two of the series 3-16.
Northland totaled seven hits in the first game of the doubleheader, with Guyette leading the team with three singles. Murphy had a pair of hits, and
Caden Willis and Vessey each had one hit, with Vessey having the team's sole extra-base hit with a double. Birko started the game for the Jacks and went 4.1 innings with six strikeouts and four earned runs.
The Polars started the series finale by scoring five runs in the first two innings to take the early lead. Davison sent a ball over the fence for a solo home run in the fourth to get the Jacks on the board, but Crown would respond in the bottom half.
Mychal Castillo singled to start the fifth inning.
Dezmon LeTexier would trade places with him after a fielder's choice and would reach second on a passed ball. The senior would come around and score off an error by Crown.
The Polars continued to add to their lead in the fifth and sixth. In the seventh NC started to chip away at the lead. A double from LeTexier and a single from Guyette put runners on the corners for Davison, who would drive in both runners with a single. That would be the last runs for the Jacks as they fall in the finale 4-11.
Northland totaled 10 hits in its final game with the Polars. Davison led the team with three hits and three RBIs. Guyette, Castillo, and LeTexier had two hits, and Vessey had one. The extra-base hits were by LeTexier with a double, and Davison hit his first home run for Northland.
Anthony Boyle started for NC and went four innings with seven earned runs and one strikeout.
Kazdion Mount followed with three Ks in two innings of work.
Ethan Boyce and Solberg pitched the last two innings and did not allow a run.
The LumberJacks will play a doubleheader with St. Norbert College on Monday, starting at 12 p.m. in De Pere, Wis.
