DULUTH, Minn. – The Northland College Baseball team dropped two games to the College of St. Scholastica 8-2 and 13-3 in a nonconference doubleheader in Duluth, Minn., Wednesday evening.

Vinny Cooney had the first hit of the game with a single to right field in the top of the first, though would be left on base as the side was retired. The Saint in the bottom half of the inning would go ahead 3-0 to wrap up the first.

Northland would respond in the second. Caden Willis led off with a double down the left field line, followed by a single by Tyler Murphy to put runners on the corners for Jonjay Arreazola. Arreazola would come through with a single driving in both runners to cut the lead down to one. A double play and a ground out would end the scoring there for the Jacks.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Saints had the bases loaded. A ball that was hit down the right line was snagged by Ridge Guyette to get the third out and to get out of the inning without any damage being done. The Saints would add five runs in the fifth. Those would be the final runs of game one as CSS took game one 8-2.

Northland totaled eight hits in game one with Cooney and Arreazola leading the team with two. Willis had the team's sole extra-base hit with a double. Arreazola would record both RBIs for the LumberJacks. On the mound, Claudio Aguilar started the game and pitched five innings. The senior would record one strikeout and give up all eight earned runs. Grant Vessey pitched the final inning without giving up a run and adding one strikeout.

Vessey had the first hit for the LumberJacks in the first inning of game one, but the offense could not find a groove as that would be the only hit for Northland until the seventh inning. The Saints took the lead with a three-run first inning and did not look back.

The LumberJacks started to rally back in the seventh. Cole Giesregen reached first after an error to start the inning. A pair of fielder's choices had Evan Mallett on first with two outs. Elijah Myers drew a walk to put two on. A passed ball advanced the runners a base. Nathan Davison doubled to score the first two runs for the Jacks. Davison would cross the plate for the third run of the inning after Guyette lifted a ball to right field. The scoring would end there, and Northland would fall 13-3.

The LumberJacks will play a three-game Upper Midwest Athletic Conference series with Crown College starting on Friday.

Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, WI. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 14 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
