Northland falls in extra innings to Dominican

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Northland College Baseball team was defeated in 10 innings to Dominican University 7-6 in its first game of the day and then fell 17-1 to Trine University on Thursday at the MattRuss Tournament in Orlando, Fla.
 
In the first inning against Dominican, Nathan Davison had the first hit with a single to center field but was left on base. A hit and hit by pitch with one out had the Stars threatening in the first, but Ethan Boyce got out of the jam.
 
The LumberJacks had a big second inning, starting with Gabe Villa reaching on an error. Nolan Hemmesch and Bryce Smith drawing walks loaded the bases. Jonjay Arreazola, Tyler Murphy, and Davison all had singles to put Northland up 3-0. Ridge Guyette drew a bases loaded walk to score the fourth run of the inning. The scoring was capped off with a two-run RBI single by Villa. The Starts would get one run back in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 6-1 in favor of the Jacks.
 
Dominican would add another in the third, but Boyce would stop the scoring there. The Northland offense would go quiet for the next three innings. In the sixth, Davison would reach on the Jacks' first extra base hit with a double to centerfield, but the score would remain 6-2. Peyton Solberg entered the game to pitch the sixth inning. After loading the bases with two walks and a hit by pitch, the Stars looked to cut the lead. Some big defensive plays by Murphy left the runners on base to keep the four-run advantage intact. The Stars would make it a one-run game after a three-run homerun in the seventh.
 
The LumberJacks entered the ninth inning up one. Northland was unable to build up its lead as they would go down in order. After the first two batters were retired, the Stars put in a pinch hitter, Tyler Johnson, and on the first pitch he saw put it over the fence to tie the game. Solberg retired the next batter as the game would go to extras. A base hit in the 10th would win the game for the Stars 7-6.
 
The LumberJacks totaled seven hits, with Davison recording three of them with two singles and a double. Murphy had two singles, and Villa and Arreazola each singled in the day's first contest. Smith drew a team-high two walks with Murphy, Guyette, Davison, and Arreazola also getting a free pass. All six runs came from a different LumberJack. Villa led the team with two RBIs.
 
On the mound, Boyce pitched five innings, striking out seven batters and only giving up two earned runs. Solberg pitched the following four innings with three strikeouts and four earned runs, and Anthony Boyle pitched the final inning for NC.
 
In game two, Trine struck early, in the first inning, pushing four runs across the plate. The Jacks were unable to get anything going in the first three innings except for a walk by Caden Willis in the first and a single from Boyce. After the first inning, Dezmon LeTexier held Trine in the second and third innings, only seeing one more batter than the minimum. The Thunder struck again in the fourth inning, this time adding six more runs to their total, and followed it up with four in the fifth.
 
Northland put together some offense in the bottom of the fifth. Jay Harris singled to left field, and Boyce drew a walk. With runners on first and second, Davison hit a hard groundball up the middle to score Harris. Trine would add three more runs to close out the game.
 
The Jacks had five singles coming from Boyce, Harris, Solberg, Guyette, and Davison. Harris scored the sole run for NC, with Davison recording the RBI.
 
LeTexier started the game for Northland, going three innings with two strikeouts and six earned runs. Vinny Cooney pitched the following three innings with two more Ks and seven earned runs. Austin Tellefsen pitched a scoreless final inning with two strikeouts.
 
The LumberJacks have their final game at the MattRuss Tournament tomorrow (Friday) with an 8:30 a.m. start time.
