EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The Northland College Women's Hockey team fell 8-1 to No. 13/(RV) University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon in Eau Claire, Wis. Junior
Kyleigh Moffatt scored her sixth goal of the season in the loss.
In the first period, the LumberJills spent a lot of time in their own zone, but the defense held the Blugolds to only nine shots on target. UW-Eau Claire struck first with less than two minutes remaining in the period, taking a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Blugolds came out strong in the second period with more shots, but
Zoey Soost stood tall, denying them in the early minutes. Moffatt had the first shot for the LumberJills, and the bouncing puck found its way through the five-hole, bringing Northland level. UW-Eau Claire regained the lead two minutes later. The LumberJills had their first power play of the game but were unable to capitalize. The Blugolds would go on to score twice more before the end of the period.
Penalties hurt Northland early in the final period, with UW-Eau Claire scoring two goals in the first six minutes. The Blugolds added two more goals to seal the victory.
Moffatt's sixth goal of the season brought her total to seven points.
Karsyn McQuaker assisted on the goal, earning her third point of the season.
Kennedy Gruhlke and
Kylie Schryer also recorded shots on goal. Northland blocked 13 shots, with
Bre Rutz leading the team with three blocks. Soost made 34 saves, and
Maddy Bliss entered in the final minutes, stopping the three shots she faced.
The LumberJills will begin their final week of the regular season next week with a two-game series against the University of Wisconsin-Superior, starting at 7 p.m. on Friday.
