Rachel Fussy scores first collegiate goal against Pointers

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Women's Hockey team fell to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 10-1 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday evening in Ashland, Wis. In only her fourth game with the LumberJills, sophomore Rachel Fussy netted her first collegiate goal.

The Jills started on the power play after a bench misconduct penalty by UWSP. Nevaeh Trihey and Kylie Schryer had shots early but were unable to beat the goaltender. After the power play ended, Maddy Bliss came up big, making seven saves. It was then time for Northland to go on the penalty kill. Bliss made two more saves before another penalty had the Jills down three skaters to five. The Pointers capitalized and scored their first goal. Northland continued to fight off the penalty, but as soon as they were back to full strength, UW-Stevens Point netted another goal. Before the period ended, the Pointers led 3-0.

Penalties continued to hurt the Jills, as UWSP took advantage of the extra skater. With just over six minutes left in the second period, Kylie Schryer found Rachel Fussy in front of the goal, and the sophomore slipped the puck past the goaltender to score her first collegiate goal. After the goal, Northland spent more time in the Pointers' zone. Down the stretch, Trihey, Schryer, and Kennedy Grukle all had shots on target, but each was turned away.

Fussy had a great opportunity to add another early in the third period, but a save by Anne Beck stopped her. The Pointers would add three more goals in the third period, bringing the final score to 10-1.

Rachel Fussy recorded her first point as a LumberJill with her first collegiate goal. Schryer and Yvonne Durfee earned assists on the goal. Trihey and Schryer led the team in shots, each tallying three. Defensively, Kiera Fairnington blocked a game-high five shots. In net, Bliss made 37 saves.

The LumberJills start their next series on Feb. 12 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
