ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Men's Hockey team fought hard against Bethel University but fell short 3-1 Saturday night in Ashland, Wis.
It did not take long for the Royals to open the scoring, netting their first a minute and 15 seconds in. The Jacks soon tested Bethel's goalie with
Nolan Christy,
Brock Hart, and
Valerii Kneib all tallying shots on target.
Logan Gallagher leveled the game just over six minutes in with his fifth goal of the season.
Joe Weber and
Hunter Nelson assisted on the goal. Both teams had their chances but the game remained tied at one after the first 20 minutes.
In the second period, the Royals fired a period-high 19 shots on target, while the LumberJacks' offense could only manage six.
Dakota Meyer kept the Jacks in the game stopping 17 shots, but Bethel took the lead on its 18
th shot with just over three minutes left in the period.
The Jacks began the third period on the penalty kill, but Meyer kept the game within reach, saving all three shots that came his way. As soon as the penalty expired, Gallagher had a chance to tie the game, but Bethel's Austin Ryman made the save. Bethel would score its third goal of the game eight minutes in, shortly after a Northland power play ended. In the final two minutes, Northland pulled its goalie for the extra skater. The Jacks registered two shots on target, but the game ended 3-1.
Gallagher netted his fifth goal of the season with Nelson and Weber earning a point on an assist. The LumberJacks had 27 shots against the Royals with Hart, Christy, and Kneib pacing the team with four shots.
George Haigley and
Evan Ilkos rounded out the top five with three shots.
Trey Taylor helped Meyer out blocking a career-high seven shots to lead NC. Meyer made 46 saves to end the game.
The Jacks host Saint John's University on Jan. 10 for their next game with a 7 p.m., puck drop.
