Northland scores two early goals but falls to St. John’s

Jacks defeated at home 6-3

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Men's Hockey team scored two early goals but fell short, losing 6-3 to St. John's University on Friday night in Ashland, Wis.

Less than 80 seconds into the game, Joe Weber fired a shot that found the back of the net, giving the LumberJacks an early lead. Shortly after, Northland had a power play opportunity where Trey Taylor, Valerii Kneib, and Weber all recorded shots on target. After the power play ended, Northland continued to press offensively, and Kneib doubled the lead with his second goal of the season. Less than three minutes later, St. John's answered with its first goal of the game. On a delayed penalty, the Johnnies pulled their goalie for an extra skater and tied the game at two before the first intermission.

To start the second period, Dakota Meyer was tested early, making five saves in the first 90 seconds. The LumberJacks had a chance to go on the offensive with another power play, but after the two minutes, the game remained tied. As the Johnnies returned to full strength, they came down the ice and took their first lead of the game. The lead lasted almost 10 minutes but Andronique Stepanian netted the team's third tying the match. In the final minutes, it was four-on-four hockey and SJU regained the lead with less than a minute remaining.

Early in the final period, the Jacks committed another penalty, and the Johnnies capitalized with their fifth goal of the game. Northland then had a five-on-three power play but was unable to get a shot off. The Jacks continued to pressure the Johnnies' goaltender but could not find the back of the net. In the final minutes, Northland pulled its goalie, but St. John's scored an empty-net goal to seal the 6-3 victory.

Knieb, Weber, and Stepanian helped lead the Jacks in their highest-scoring game of the season. Brock Hart, Luke VanBaalen, Zach Hutchinson, and Kneib all earned a point from an assist. Knieb also led the Jacks in shots with four of the team's 30. Taylor blocked a team-high three shots. In the net, Meyer made 40 saves.

The Jacks return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Jan 15 as they travel to the University of Wisconsin-Superior for a 7 p.m., puck drop.
