Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Christy nets first career goal at UW-Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Northland College Men's Hockey team was defeated 7-1 by the University of Wisconsin-Superior in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday in Superior, Wis. Freshman Nolan Christy scored his first career goal in the second period.

The game began with the Yellowjackets applying heavy offensive pressure in the Northland zone, but goaltender Andrew Yocum stood tall early on. Five minutes into the game, on a power play, Brock Hart recorded the first shot for Northland. UW-Superior continued to test Yocum, and in the 14th minute, they found the back of the net. The LumberJacks had an opportunity to answer on another power play, with shots from Ben Stewart and Christy, but were still held scoreless. In the final three minutes of the period, UWS added another goal.

The second period was similar to the first, with the Yellowjackets spending much of the time in possession of the puck. This time, it took less than five minutes for them to extend their lead to three. Northland had another man advantage, but UWS scored its fourth goal shorthanded. Just 25 seconds later, Christy deflected a shot from Hart into the back of the net, getting the LumberJacks on the board. Before the period ended, the Yellowjackets regained their four-goal lead.

Less than a minute into the third period, John Leppert slid into the boards, putting a hole in one and causing the action to be halted for over 30 minutes. When play resumed, the Jacks were on the penalty kill and only allowed one shot on goal, which Yocum handled. Northland could only manage two shots in the final period, while the Yellowjackets scored two more goals to finish the game 7-1.

Christy recorded his first collegiate point with his first college goal. Mac Reed and Hart each earned an assist on the play. Christy led the team with three shots, while Leppert and Hart each had two. The Jacks blocked nine shots, with Trey Taylor stopping three. In net, Yocum made 34 saves.

The LumberJacks will step away from WIAC action as they travel to St. Mary's University for a 7 p.m. game on Friday.
