ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Women's Hockey team scored first but fell 10-1 to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday night in Ashland, Wis. Freshman
Karsyn McQuaker netted her first collegiate goal in the first period.
Maddy Bliss started in goal for the Jills and made several key saves early in the game.
Yvonne Durfee had the first shot on target for the LumberJills before the four-minute mark. Bliss continued to make big saves for Northland, stopping seven more shots in a span of four minutes. With under nine minutes remaining, McQuaker deflected a shot by
Tate Hutchinson into the back of the net to give the Jills a 1-0 lead. Bliss finished the first period with 18 saves, helping Northland maintain its lead.
However, just 11 seconds into the second period, the Pointers tied the game at 1-1. Four minutes later, they took the lead. UW-Stevens Point found their rhythm, and their shots began to find the back of the net. Northland had a few power play opportunities but could not capitalize on them.
McQuaker's goal was the first of her career at Northland, earning her second point of the season. Hutchinson assisted on the goal and now has three points.
Kyleigh Moffatt led the team with three shots on net, while defensively,
Hannah Chady blocked five shots. In net, Bliss made 24 saves, and
Zoey Soost entered the game in the second period, finishing with 17 saves.
The LumberJills and Pointers will conclude their series tomorrow (Saturday) with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
