DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Northland College Women's Hockey team fell in its series final with the University of Dubuque 9-2 Saturday afternoon in Dubuque, Iowa. Freshman
Hannah Chady scored her first collegiate goal in the third period.
The Spartans came out strong, with
Maddy Bliss making three saves in the first two minutes of play. The Jills were forced to kill a penalty early, and Dubuque capitalized, scoring the opening goal on the power play. Northland had several scoring chances in the first period, with
Yvonne Durfee,
Kennedy Gruhlke,
Kylie Schryer, and
Tate Hutchinson all recording shots on goal. However, Dubuque added another goal before the period ended.
In the second period, the Spartans extended their lead with a second power-play goal just over nine minutes in. Northland responded quickly with a goal from
Kyleigh Moffatt, scoring 17 seconds later to put the Jills on the board. However, Dubuque added multiple goals in a 100-second stretch, widening their lead by the end of the period.
The Jills had their best offensive performance in the third period, registering 10 shots. One of those shots came from Chady, who scored her first collegiate goal with a long-range shot that found the back of the net.
Moffatt, who has scored in back-to-back games, now leads the team with four goals and five total points. Chady also recorded her first collegiate point with her goal. Gruhlke, Hutchinson, and
Nevaeh Trihey each earned assists on the goals.
Kiera Fairnington led the team with four shots, while Chady tallied a game-high four blocked shots. In net,
Maddy Bliss made 25 saves in just over a period and a half, while
Zoe Laming finished the game with eight saves.
The LumberJills hosts No. 8 Augsburg University on Monday with a 6 p.m., puck drop.
