DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Northland College Women's Hockey team scored a season-high four goals in a 4-6 loss to the University of Dubuque in Dubuque, Iowa Friday night.
The game began with the puck spending a lot of time in Northland's zone. The Spartans scored the opening goal before the LumberJills had a chance to record a shot. Northland's offense came to life with
Kylie Schryer and
Julia Fussy firing shots on goal. After 12 minutes, Dubuque doubled its lead to two. In the final two minutes of the period,
Kennedy Gruhlke took her first shot of the game, beating the goaltender to put Northland on the board.
Just four minutes into the second period, the LumberJills tied the game when
Kyleigh Moffatt scored her second goal of the season off a rebound from a shot by Gruhlke. Late in the period, Northland was assessed its first penalty of the game. However, Moffatt caught the Dubuque goaltender off guard, stealing the puck and scoring a short-handed goal to give Northland its first lead of the game. Once
Julia Fussy's penalty expired, Neveah Trihey found Fussy alone at the blue line. Fussy took the goaltender on one-on-one and buried the puck, putting Northland up 4-2. With eight seconds remaining in the period, Dubuque cut the lead to 4-3.
Both teams had early opportunities in the third period, but the score remained 4-3 until seven minutes in, when the Spartans tied the game. With under nine minutes remaining, Dubuque took the lead. Northland pulled its goalie in the final minutes, but the Spartans capitalized, scoring the final goal on an empty net to secure a 6-4 victory.
Moffatt recorded her first career multiple-goal game with Northland. Fussy and Gruhlke each scored their second goals of the season. Assists were recorded by
Tate Hutchinson,
Bre Rutz, Trihey, and Gruhlke. Hutchinson and Rutz each earned their first career college points. Moffatt led the team with five shots and five blocked shots.
Zoey Soost was in net for the LumberJills and made 34 saves.
The LumberJills and Spartans will conclude their two-game series tomorrow (Saturday) with a 3 p.m. puck drop.
