LumberJacks drop UMAC contest to Martin Luther

Williams scores in loss to the Knights

NEW ULM, Minn. – The Northland College Men's Soccer team fell 4-1 to Martin Luther College in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play in New Ulm, Minn., Saturday afternoon. Freshman Deshaun Williams scored his first collegiate goal in the loss.
 
Rodrigo Chavez was tested early, making his first save right after the game's first minute off a free kick. The Jacks stormed the field and had their first shot on target shortly after with a low-driven ball from Chris Gomez. Keenan Bayer drove into the box and got a shot off that got deflected and out for a Northland corner kick near the 15-minute mark. The Knights found the back of the net first capitalizing on a free kick that was sent into the box. Two minutes later MLC doubled its lead after finding his way past the defense. The LumberJacks tallied seven shots in the first half but couldn't find the back of the net, thus entering halftime down 0-2.
 
Northland had the first shot of the second half when a shot from Avery Zenger to the bottom left side of the goal that was saved. Following the goal kick MLC tested Chavez with a shot that he collected. Northland continued to press hard but would lead to the Knights coming down to get opportunities on goal and scoring twice more. The Jacks got off the goose egg with a goal from Deshaun Williams who scored after a ball was swung into the box from a corner. Northland kept the offense up but could not get past the back line and dropped the contest 4-1.
 
The LumberJacks had their most shots in a game this season with 12 and five were on frame. Williams paced the team with four and two on target. One of William's shots found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Zenger was behind him with three on one on goal. In net, Chavez made 11 saves for his third game with double-digit saves.
 
On Tuesday Northland travels to North Central University for a 4:30 p.m., game in Minneapolis, Minn.
