ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Men's Hockey team dropped the series finale against No. 8 University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 4-3 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday night in Ashland, Wis. Sophomore
Trey Taylor scored his first collegiate goal.
Starting the game
Bryson Cecconi tested the goalie early with a quick shot on goal. The Pointers scored first at 13:38. In the final minute,
Eric Honold scored his second goal in as many days to level the game. In the first period, shots were pretty even with UWSP taking a slight edge at 16-to-13.
After killing a penalty the Jacks went down the ice and Taylor scored his first collegiate goal to give Northland the lead. Six minutes later
Zach Ross doubled the lead for NC with
Ben Stewart and Taylor assisting on it. In the final two minutes, the Pointers were able to tie the game at three entering the second intermission.
The third period was back and forth with both teams combining for 16 penalty minutes. The Pointers took the lead with a goal from Nicholas Aromatario. Trying to tie the game Northland pulled its goalie for the extra skater but was unable to find the equalizer.
The Jacks tallied 26 shots on net. Taylor had a big game with three points, scoring one and assisting on the other two. Ross and Honold picked up a point from scoring.
Ben Stewart assisted on two goals and
Logan Gallagher had one. Stewart and
Kenny Styles led the team in shots with four and Ross was behind them with three.
Viktor Wennberg started in net and made 54 saves in the loss. Northland blocked 14 shots with
Brendan Charlton, Honold and Gallagher stopping two each.
The Jacks enter the final week of the regular season as they host the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for a two-game series.
