LumberJills can’t find the equalizer against UW-Stevens Point in WIAC Tournament

Richards scores her first goal of the season

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Northland College Women's Hockey team started the postseason against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Tuesday afternoon in Stevens Point, Wis., dropping the contest 2-1. Senior Kiera Richards scored her first goal of the year in the final game of the season.
 
Starting the game, the Pointers put pressure on senior goaltender Corrin Hanson but she kept them scoreless for the opening minutes. Daphne Gray had the first shot on goal for the Jills that Hannah Baumann followed up for another shot on frame. Right before the nine-minute mark, Josie Bender scored the opening goal for the Pointer. Northland responded shortly after with Kiera Richards scoring her first goal of the season to level the game at one. Before the first horn, UWSP retook the lead with the game-winning goal.
 
The second period was scoreless for both teams. The Pointers outshot the LumberJills in the second frame 12-5 but Hanson turned away all 12 shots. In the circle, Northland has won more faceoffs at 27-to-13 with Baumann and Elle Black winning nine in the first 40 minutes.
 
Hanson kept the Jills in the contest keeping the lead at one for UW-Stevens Point. Northland had a two-man advantage for a minute but was unable to find the equalizer. After the powerplay ended the Jills were down a skater but killed off the powerplay with five minutes left in the game. During the final minute, the LumberJills pulled their goalie for an extra skater but were unable to force overtime ending their season against UWSP.
 
Northland tallied 26 shots on goal in the game with Jamie Steinmetz, Kate Holtz, and Richards pacing the team with four. Richards scored the sole goal for NC, her first on the season and her second in her career. Kyleigh Moffatt assisted on the goal and ended the year with 12 points, second-most for Northland.
 
In net, Hanson did all she could to keep the Jills in the game making 39 saves on 41 shots for a save percentage of .951. The defensive did not allow a powerplay goal in the five opportunities the Pointers had. Steinmetz led the team in blocked shots, stopping seven of the team's 17.
