ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Men's Hockey team fell in its final game of the season 4-1 to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Saturday night in Ashland, Wis.
Before the puck dropped Northland College honored the 10 seniors on the LumberJacks Hockey team for all they have done over the years.
The Falcons put together a strong opening period with 20 shots on target. Northland goaltender
Viktor Wennberg saved 19 of the shot keeping it a one-goal game entering the first intermission. The LumberJacks had five shots, all coming from different student-athletes.
Just like the opening period, the UW-River Falls continued to pepper shots towards goal and just like the first period Wennberg saved all but one shot resulting in a 2-0 lead for the Falcons. The Jacks got one more shot than the first period but could not beat Dyson Skinner.
Early in the final period, UWRF added its third of the game. Northland had its best period in the final 20 minutes tallying seven shots on goal with
Kenny Styles landing NC on the board with
Connor Taylor picking up the assist. In the final minutes, Northland pulled the goalie for the extra skate and the Falcons put another in the net to win 4-1.
The Jacks had 18 shots in the loss with
Zach Ross and Styles leading the team with three. The duo each had one shot in each period. Styles with his goal boosted him up to six points on the season and Taylor is now at four after his assist.
Wennberg had a big game in net with 47 saves and ended the game with a 94 percent save rate. Northland blocked nine shots with
Ben Stewart and
Sam Holy stopping two.
The Jacks begin the WIAC Playoffs next week when they travel to the University of Wisconsin-Stout for a two-game series with games at 7 p.m., on Friday and Saturday.
