Northland strikes first but falls to UW-Superior

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Men's Hockey team scored first but fell 1-8 to the University of Wisconsin-Superior in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Saturday night in Ashland, Wis.

After spending a large chunk of time in Northland's zone, the Jacks broke out and Logan Gallagher buried the team's first shot to go up early. The lead did not last long as UW-Superior would answer back two minutes later, then take the lead right before the 11-minute mark. The Yellowjacket had their first power play opportunity but Dakota Meyer would save all three shots over the two minutes. In the final two minutes, Northland had the man advantage but was unable to level the game to go into the first intermission.

Not even four minutes into the second, the Yellowjackets would add two more to increase their lead to three. Evan Ilkos had a chance to get one back soon after but Jan Skorpik turned him away. The game had some four-on-four action with both teams tallying two shots but the score remained the same after the two minutes. Another power play for NC had Hunter Nelson and Valerii Kneib both sending a shot toward net but the Jacks stayed at one. After all the penalties in the second, the Yellowjackets scored with the extra man.

Just like the second period, UWS added two quick goals to start the third. Northland had a stretch of 90 seconds with four shots on target but Skorpik stood tall. More penalty minutes led to more chances for the Yellowjacks. Northland had 17 minutes in the box and the UWS added its final goal with less than five minutes remaining.

Gallagher netted his fourth goal of the season for the Jacks with Christian Shields earning his first collegiate point on the assist. Northland totaled 26 shots in the loss with, Sam Holy, Gallagher, and Ilkos pacing the team with three. The defense blocked 14 shots with Holy stopping a team-high four. In the net, Meyer made 35 saves.

The Jacks kick off 2025 with a game on Jan. 3 as they host the College of St. Scholastica at 7 p.m.
