No.1 UW-River Falls too much for Northland

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Women's Hockey team was defeated 11-0 by No. 1 University of Wisconsin-River Falls in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon in Ashland, Wis.
 
Freshman Maddy Bliss made her collegiate debut starting in the net and was tested early. Bliss made her first save in the first minute of play. Yvonne Durfee had the first shot for Northland two minutes in with Kennedy Gruhlke following it up seconds later. The Falcons scored right before the three-minute mark and added a second nine minutes in. The LumberJill defense and Bliss held the top team in Division III out for the final 11 minutes of the period.
 
The second had an early goal from UWRF. The Jills were down a skater early in the second and killed off the penalty. In the two minutes, they only allowed two shots on target with the defense blocking another three. In the dying seconds of the period, Northland had a chance with Gruhlke sending two shots as time expired.
 
Northland had a few more shots in the final period coming from Gruhlke and Kyleigh Moffatt but were held off the score sheet. The Falcons continued their unbeaten streak as they defeated Northland.
 
Gruhlke led the Jills with four shots in the game. Moffatt and Durfee tested the goaltender with a shot in the action. Kiera Fairnington and Kylie Schryer led NC in the circle with eight and seven faceoff wins respectively. Hannah Chady blocked seven shots over the 60 minutes with Tate Hutchinson finishing behind her with five. Bliss in her first collegiate game made 50 saves.
 
The LumberJills travel to the University of Wisconsin-Superior next Friday for another WIAC game at 2 p.m.
