LumberJills start 2024 with three home games

Women’s Hockey returns to the ice in nearly a month

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Women's Hockey team starts 2024 at the Bay Area Civic Center with three games. The LumberJills kick off the new year with the University of Dubuque on Wednesday at 4 p.m., followed by a two-game series with Aurora University on Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Spartans of Dubuque are 2-10 in their inaugural season and are currently on a nine-game losing streak and have not scored in their last five games. The two wins came against Trine University winning 5-4 and 2-0 in the first week of November. UD returned from the holiday break where they played Lake Forest College and Trine and fell 0-6 and 0-5 respectively. Senior Cassidy Becia leads the Spartans with seven points coming from four goals and three assists. Freshman Savannah Wuitschick has started 11 games in goal and has made 544 saves and has a percentage of 90.5 percent.
 
The Aurora Spartans are 7-6 coming out of the holiday break. Before the break, AU was swept in a two-game series against Gustavus Adolphus College 5-0 and 1-0. Aurora averages 3.8 goals per game, while only giving up 2.2. Junior Darci Matson paces the team with 23 points, eighth in Division III, off 11 goals and 12 assists. Seniors Tia Glube and Marie Dedect have split time in net with Glube leading the pair with 145 saves to Dedect's 137.
 
Halfway through the season the Jills have matched their win total from last season and have recorded their first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Conference point in three seasons. Northland's most recent win came against Lawrence University claiming a 2-1 road victory.
 
Freshman Audrey Ellerington leads the LumberJills with nine points, on six goals and three assists. Ellerington scored a hat trick against Concordia College, Moorhead. In the same game, sophomore Kyleigh Moffatt assisted on five goals that helped bring her season point total to six, third-best on the team. Freshman Hannah Baumann is second on the team with seven points coming from three goals and four assists.
 
In net, Karlee Lehner has started eight games and has a record of 2-5-1. The freshman has 282 saves and a save percentage of 92.5 percent. Corrin Hanson and Zoe Laming have also started games between the pipes and both have a save percentage over 80 percent. The defense has also stepped up and is second in the WIAC, blocking 13.15 shots per game. Freshman Daphne Gray leads the team in blocks with 21.
