Jacks downed by Blue Devils in first game of two-game series

Northland falls 4-1 on the road

MENOMONIE, Wis. – The Northland College Men's Hockey team returned to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action and dropped the contest to the University of Wisconsin-Stout 4-1 on the road.
 
This is the second time the LumberJacks and Blue Devils met. In the first matchup, Northland was shut out and had a better result than the first time out.
 
The Jacks started the game down a man due to a delay of game penalty. The Northland defense started strong and did not allow a shot in the power play. Once the Jacks got to full strength Ben Stewart had the first shot of the game. At the six-minute mark, the Blue Devils had another powerplay. This time Viktor Wennberg had to make two saves but the game remained knotted at zero. UWS struck first with four minutes remaining in the first period. At the end of the first, the Jacks outshot the Blue Devil 11-to-7 but UW-Stout had a one-goal advantage.
 
On the fourth Blue Devil's power play, they found the back of the net with the extra skater. Not even two minutes later they took at three-goal lead. UWS ended its scoring with a fourth goal with two and a half minutes remaining. Jackson Breton landed the Jacks on the board getting an assist from Trey Taylor.
 
For the second period, Northland out shot UW-Stout 10-to-8 however both teams were kept out of the net in the final period resulting in a 4-1 win for the Blue Devils.
 
In his fourth game this season, Andronique Stephanian led the team in shots with four. Behind him were Stewart, Bryson Cecconi, and Kenny Styles all with three. Breton now is tied for the most goals on the team with six, tied with Camille Marcoux. Taylor picked up his second assist on the season.
 
Wennberg made the start in goal for Northland. He saw 30 shots and turned away 26 for a save percentage of 86.7 percent. The Jacks blocked 10 shots with Stewart and Brandon Holt pacing the team with two.
 
The Jacks end the two-game series tomorrow (Saturday) with a 7 p.m., puck drop in Menomonie, Wis.
